Recently, Procter & Gamble recalled products due to the presence of the toxic chemical, benzene. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the brands listed in the recall are: Pantene; Aussie; Herbal Essences; Waterless; Old Spice; and Hair Food. The products are aerosol dry shampoo spray and aerosol dry conditioner spray.

These products are sold nationwide in the United States. Retailers have been alerted to remove these products from shelves. Consumers should stop using these products and throw them away immediately. There have not been any reports of illnesses or other adverse events related to this recall. This is a voluntary recall.

In their statement, Proctor & Gamble said, “Following recent reports that indicated traces of benzene in some aerosol spray products, we began a review of our total portfolio of aerosol products…While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our products, our review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.”

The potential risk of benzene can be life-threatening. Benzene can cause some types of cancer and blood disorders. Exposure to benzene can occur through the skin, mouth, or inhalation.
